The National Portrait Gallery's Reference Collection contains works intended to support the study of British portraiture. Acquisition criteria are less stringent than those for the Gallery's Primary Collection, in which the importance of the sitter of the portrait is paramount. The Reference Collection includes drawings, paintings and sculpture, but largely consists of portrait prints. It includes important early collections by the mezzotint engravers John Smith and Alexander Browne and a number of extra- illustrated volumes, including an extra-illustrated Granger. The collection of satirical prints is expanding and includes an excellent bound set of Gillray caricatures.
